Current conditions of immigrant communities in the US

Opportunities and alternatives for immigrants, mainly those without legal documentation, have decreased substantially during the term of President Donald Trump, belonging to the Republican political party.

His administration ensures that immigrants who decide to cross the borders without prior authorization violate local law and, therefore, should not have opportunities or options to obtain a legal residence or work permit in the US. In fact, President Trump has repeatedly labeled undocumented immigrants as “criminals,” stating that if the local government gives them opportunities to obtain legal permits, that would only increase and encourage illegal immigration.

Thus, in recent years, undocumented immigrant communities, seeking international protection or employment opportunities, have experienced adverse circumstances and constant threats from the Trump administration.

To give a specific example, the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency has increased operations to massively detain undocumented immigrants across the US with the approval and support of the federal government.

These circumstances definitely instill fear, hopelessness and despair among undocumented immigrant communities. In fact, many of them hide in “sanctuary cities or jurisdictions”, which protect them from border forces, as well as in religious facilities that offer help to the most vulnerable communities.

Elections are a door of hope for immigrants

The presidential elections of the US will define the near future of undocumented foreigners and immigrants who need to request international protection through humanitarian programs such as political asylum or refuge.

This is mainly because if President Trump wins re-election, the immigration sector is likely to face more restrictions, while if former Vice President Joe Biden wins the election, who belongs to the Democratic political party, there could be more possibilities for undocumented immigrants and those fleeing danger to obtain legal entry or residence permits in the country.

In fact, in one of our most recent articles, we talk about dozens of asylum seekers who are patiently waiting for the results of the presidential elections on the borders of Mexico under Trump’s “Remain in Mexico” policy, also known as Migrant Protection Protocol (MPP). Broadly speaking, this policy forces asylum seekers to remain in Mexico while receiving a response to their immigration applications. Currently, they go through precarious situations due to the lack of basic resources such as food, water, medicine and shelter.

Adding to that, there are immigrant families waiting in religious facilities while the American population elects the nation’s next leader, who will also decide their future. Not only are they concerned about deportation, but they could also be separated from their children or catch COVID-19, which increases the risk for them.
